Planning for Control of Sarcoptic Mange and Swine Lice Many insecticides control lice without controlling mange, but proper application of materials that control sarcoptic mange also will control lice if they are present.

Some products kill few eggs of mites and lice, so they must be used repeatedly at recommended intervals. Eliminate lice and mange on sows before farrowing. In Florida, the major pests on swine are lice, mange mites, ticks and stable flies, although horse flies, deer flies, mosquitoes, and wound-infesting maggots may also cause severe problems.

Hog Lice The hog louse (Figures 1 and 2) is the most frequently found external parasite of swine in Florida. Dectomax Injectable is labeled for mite control on swine. Feed Through Ivomec Premix, at the rate of 2 parts per million in the feed for 7 consecutive days, can control mites and lice.

Pigs may be slaughtered for consumption only after 5 days form the last treatment. Lice are vectors for disease such as swine pox. Lice can be treated and prevented with ivomec, brand name Ivermectin. This is the same medication, at the same dose, that is used to treat and prevent mites.

See dosage here. Dec 15,  · In addition, mange mites can be controlled in the same way, but some injectable products can also be used to control these parasites.

Injectable and pour-on products can be used for mange mites and sucking lice, but only pour-on products are affective against biting niarbylbaycafe.com: Niall Claffey. A repeated treatment kills lice that emerge from eggs days after an initial treatment.

Several parasiticides control external parasites other than lice (flies, mites and ticks). Injectable avermectins have been very effective in controlling both lice and mange and programs have been devised for eradicating both. SwineGuard™ is a ready to use oil-based pour on formulation for swine that aids in controlling biting flies, including mosquitoes.

Also provides long lasting residual control of mange mites and lice on swine. Apply using the SwineGuard™ Applicator Gun (#, sold separately)%. Ivermectin is used to treat mange mites (scabies), lice, roundworms, lungworms, threadworms in swine. Fenbendazole treats tapeworms, whipworms, roundworms and hookworms.

Swine performance is influenced by internal parasites, most dramatically in the young, growing pig. Mar 29,  · Lice can also transmit swine pox, a viral infection which can be fatal. Preventing and treating lice and mite infestations as soon as they occur can help keep your livestock healthy.

Also as with mites, a second or even third treatment will be needed to kill nymphs and adults that hatched and developed from eggs after the first treatment.

Treating Pig Lice and Mites. Over-the-counter meds are available for treatment of lice and mange in swine. Mange in swine is caused by mange mites. Two principal types of mange mites are found in Florida. Itch mites (sarcoptic mange; figure 2) burrow just beneath the skin making slender, winding tunnels from to 1 inch long.

Fluid discharged at the tunnel opening dries to form nodules. A toxin is also secreted that causes intense irritation and itching. Mange Mites and Lice. Effective control of mange mites and lice on swine requires sound management practices as well as proper selection and application of insecticides.

Mites and lice are spread by direct contact among animals within the herd. New animals added to the herd should be treated before coming in contact with other animals. Lice and mange mites are two common exter nal parasites found on swine. These infestations are often more prevalent in confined swine operations where animal-to-animal contact is more flies, stable flies and cockroaches, may also become pests in swine production.

Lice and Mange. Hog lice (Haematopinus suis. L.). The mange scabs on the other hand penetrate the skin surface, are not easily removed and skin damage is evident. Other diseases that might be confused with mange include greasy pig disease, swine pox and sun burn.

Occasionally in mange free herds ear scrapings may. mange is relatively unimportant in pigs. The mite is Demodex phylloides and it lives in hair follicles.

The response to treatment is poor, but the mite is sensitive to those acaricides used for sarcoptic mange control. Severely affected animals should be culled from the herd. Lice. Lice in pigs are readily observed and often.

Control and eradication strategies listed for sarcoptic mange apply equally for lice. These include special attention to the ears, treatment of the boars, multiple treatment of sows prior to farrowing, segregation of clean and untreated animals if the whole herd is not treated at.

Little data exists on the prevalence on mange mites among swine in the US. Management of mange has traditionally relied upon the macrocyclic lactones class of compounds with activity against ecto and endoparasites. In the last 30 years ivermectin and doramectin have been the mainstay for mite control (AlvaValdes et al.Arends et al.

CONTROL OF LICE AND MANGE MITES IN CATTLE Produced in consultation with the ECOA Animal Welfare Task Force, July INTRODUCION In a well managed organic herd where animals have freedom of movement, good nutrition and strong immune systems, the presence of lice and mites may have little impact.

However, when. Quarantine new arrivals for up to three weeks and carefully watch and inspect them for signs of lice, mange and other diseases.

It is much easier to treat a few animals than an entire herd. Clean out and disinfect barns between herds. Lice and mange mites cannot live long off of the host, so a two-week gap between animal groups will kill them.
